I moaned as soon as Sara mentioned the mailbox. I knew it was coming and it still devastated me.
Goodbye, Jeffrey. Goodbye, Grant County.

This was a fantastic series with an unfortunately stupid ending
'Beyond Reach' by Karin Slaughter is the last novel, in theory number six, in the Grant County murder mystery series. But it isn't really Slaughter's final book involving the same people in her continuing series featuring Georgia crimes and police detectives, or the last book with the character Dr. Sara Linton, medical examiner. Some of the characters, such as Dr. Linton, in the Grant County books are in Slaughter's next series, The Will Trent mysteries (starting with [b:Triptych|21717|Triptych (Will Trent, #1)|Karin Slaughter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1442531921l/21717._SY75_.jpg|2479325]). I highly recommend both series. I also highly recommend starting your read with [b:Blindsighted|21718|Blindsighted (Grant County, #1)|Karin Slaughter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1390283925l/21718._SY75_.jpg|2590340] as the characters have a lot of personal dramas being carried over from book to book.
The plot of this particular novel is heavily dependent on the dark character traumas of the previous books, so it wouldn't be doing readers any favors to suggest much of what this noir book is about. All I will say is, as usual with a Karin Slaughter mystery, the story is graphic, violent, and rings true.

I can’t… I just need a lot of minutes to deal with this.
Okay short likes and dislikes.
LIKES:
1) I can read Will Trent now.
2) Lena and Sybil’s back story.
3) Sarah and Jeff…

An incredibly grisly climax to the Grant County series. As always thrilling and unputdownable. If crime thrillers are your thing, I highly recommend. Slaughter is the queen.

** SPOILERS ** I'm going to say what happens in the last chapter. If you haven't read the Will Trent series then stop reading.
To start: a quick disclosure that I read the Will Trent series before the Grant County series.
When I got to the last book of the series, I knew Jeffrey was going to die. And .. I thought I knew how. Which was a special little jump scare at every turn.
I loved this book. I was completely surprised on the leader and culprit. I felt the whole thing was plausible. And through out little clues were dropped that helped the reader feel like they were piecing it together.
I was gonna give it 5 stars until the last chapter.
I know Jeffrey has to die and the pages are quickly dwindling. He arrived home (surprise) and finds out that the adoption agency was going to give Sara and him a 9 month old. (Will Trent readers know the joy for Sara and also the weight of the deep knowledge of her future.) She goes to call the social worker back, Jeffrey goes to the mailbox and is killed by a mail bomb. A bomb. Jaw drops. In Will Trent book series they said he was shot. And for that discrepancy, I dock the score. Because it is infuriating for such a simple mistake between book series.
I love Karin Slaughter. She's a great and thorough author. But the two biggest mistakes I've read is the alternate circumstances around Sara's rape and Jeffrey's death which makes the two series feel disjointed.
