As this is book 4 in the Witchland series, my review will contain spoilers for the earlier books. Proceed with caution ;)

What in the world is happening with this series????
This was one of my absolute faves and I had such a strong connection to the characters. I was invested in the story, I wanted 100 more books to come, but now? I'm sitting here soooo happy I finally finished this book :(

In book 3 everyone was miserable all the time and I really needed a book with lots of happy moments, romance and reunions for my beloved characters. Instead this book starts one month after the end of the last book and everything is even worse than in book 3!!!
The author chooses to leave us in the dark and throw in tiny throwbacks every now and then, so we're confused for the first half of the book (whyyyy? just take us with you, we've been on this journey together!).

Also the whole Paladin thing going on with Kullen in book 3 is now happening to pretty much everyone, so everyone is different people at once. As there are many characters to begin with, this makes a confusing mess of everything and annoyed me to no end.

There were maybe two happy moments in the end of the book, but even those were so muted, you never got the chance to smile or be really excited for the characters. Before that it was a whole lot of suffering and being alone and fighting.

In the end some random confusing things happened, I have no idea what was going on there.

I really really hope that the next book will make up for this disaster of a book!!

I'm rating it three stars mostly because I love the earlier books, the writing is still overall strong and I managed to finish this (though I did struggle).

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. I love the detail the author has put not just into the stories immediately on the page but on the ones in the past of the world she's built that influence the story that's unfolding. It's a complex magic system and world full of intrigue, love, tension, betrayal, secrets, etc. This story has everything you need and I couldn't put this book down. I thought about it for DAYS afterward and I cannot wait for the last book.

[3⭐ Perhaps because it has been a while since the last read, but I felt less emotionally invested. Still really good. It will likely go up in ⭐s on a re-read of the series once it is complete.]

'Yet like the monster hidden in shadows nearby, there was freedom in darkness. There was power where light never reached.'

The Author must not like us readers as well as the publisher because this book was too long and a hot mess. I honestly can't tell you what happened and why most of the stuff is going on. I thought to give this series another chance big mistake.

Confused when I started reading this book, still confused when I was finished…

I loved Bloodwitch and had high expectations for Iseult’s book because she’s my favorite character. But I felt both the characters and the plot suffered from the fact that two books were forced into this one.

In the beginning, I felt so confused because so much had happened off page between Bloodwitch and Witchshadow, I felt like there was something I didn’t remember or some point I was missing. By the time I felt caught up with the plot, there were a lot of reveals. But then I was confused by those reveals, because I feel like I still don’t have an overview of the main plot of this series. So the reveals didn’t make much of an impression because I still don’t understand the context and how the reveals impact that context. And all the names and the who-is-who was really difficult to keep track of.

I honestly don’t know how this is going to wrap up in the next book but I’ll be reading it anyway, if only to find out what happens to these characters I’ve come to enjoy so much.
