I wanted to like this book, I really did. And I did finish it, although at times I was heavily second guessing that decision)! But it was just overall so boring. It's one of those stories being told by the protagonist later in life looking back. I am not opposed to this framing, but it means that there are several points that are never in doubt (yes, he is going to survive this, yes he is going to get off the planet), so you can't rely on those points for tension. It's not like things didn't happen in this book, quite a lot did, but it all felt very trivial, like someone taking a breath before getting to the real story.
The second half of the book also hangs heavily on a character trope that I rather dislike. I am not sure what to call it, woman on a pedestal maybe? I find it grating for someone to be constantly comparing themself negatively to someone else and lamenting their own shortcomings. It doesn't feel like humility or even admiration of the other person.
I couldn't even tell you what the main plotline of this book is. It's very episodic and mostly set up for big events that get constantly mentioned, and I don't think I'm willing to slog through however many more books to find the interesting bits.
Not to mention that it is, especially in the first several chapters, SO heavily Dune inspired, distractingly so.

3.5⭐️/5. Not going to lie I didn’t love this one. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t blow me away. The way it was written was very well done but the story had way too many moments of slow dialogue. Maybe because I was listening to it but keeping track of characters and locations was very difficult. I plan to continue this series even with my feelings on this book.

I think it's interesting how much I loved the world-building and the character development, but still gave it a 3.25.
It's probably because the plot here is a stitched series of events, rather than a cohesive story. Idk, maybe I'll get used to it in the second book.
