A good bit of scifi. Kept me turning pages, though perhaps it dwelled just a bit too long in every scene/time period. Characters were fine, though I'm not heavily invested. Multiple species are fun. I'm not floored, but I am intrigued and will read the second book. Also didn't love the torture scenes.

Went into this book seeing quite a few people saying it was the weakest of the Suneater series but that getting through it was worth it for the rest. I hope that is true! I often felt as soon as this book got going it cut off what was happening to move on to something else. So much happens and not much is resolved, or not much feels resolved at least. Looking forward to continuing the series to see if thr critics are right!
