Things I liked:
- Hadrian is an actual, complicated mess
- the universe is amazing and interesting
- Valka
Things I didn’t:
- this felt sprawling and the story itself felt really long, and that was ironic because at some point, Hadrian narrates “sometimes things just happen” - the implication that they are futile and meaningless. And that is honestly the sentiment I had after some of this story - which only served to make the narrative feel longer than it was.
Overall:
I wonder if this would hit harder for me in print or ebook form so I’ll give that a try for book 2. It’s definitely interesting and I hope book 2 feels a little more gelled.

A intriguing introduction to a space epic following a disowned Hadrian Marlowe. Thoroughly enjoyable although Hadrian is very prone to pontificating which can at times slow the story down a little bit.
I will be reading the next one!

I've been kicking myself for the past 3 days for putting this series off for so long.
I'm so invested already, and all we've really done here is blunder along from mishap to mishap, somehow displaying both immense luck and incredible misfortune simultaneously. I can't imagine how I'll feel now that we're getting to the real meat and potatoes.
Deeply impressed with Ruocchio's writing style, his narrative choices, the depth and breath of this world and it's lore, as well as the philosophical and socio-political foundation it all rests on. Truly an enjoyable puzzle to put together and pull apart, being both achingly familiar and yet so futuristic as to be incomprehensible (ie. the apparent horrors of natural birth).
My favourite parts were Hadrian's little Gibson-induced ponderous interludes, as well as all the select moments where they get shattered and rearranged, such as with Salt the brazen homunculus. Many such moments adding up over time, coupled with an old man's hindsight... it made for some nice development.
I really, truly enjoyed every moment of this, slow and meander-y as it was for a while, and I'm beyond excited to sink my teeth into the next one. So many mysteries left to unfold!
