lots of people are hyping this up and I'm still a bit on the fence.
POV
It's good so far but it's also underwhelming. I saw someone commented somewhere online that having a multiple POV of this might make it a little better, but I can see why the author decided to have a single first POV.
I personally HATED first POVs + single POV throughout the entire book, might be even the entire series, but I did not hate it here. Maybe because the of the multiple time jumps that I don't care that much for the characters. I'm honestly a bit shock that some characters we've interacted with stayed for a while.
the comparisons
Again, people had comparing this to Name of the Wind and Dune. And I had read neither of them, so I don't have to side on the hated it because how derivative it is or how they liked it because they remind them of Dune or NotW (which still doesn't have the third book). Only having watched Dune both by Lynch and Villeneuve, I could see the Dune comparisons.
time jumps, setups, and the latter half SPOILERS!
Then he escaped, was abandoned (first time jump), Cat, the colosseum, etc. Aside from the homeworld part, his solo investigation + Cat part of the novels seems a bit like a bunch of extra stories or novellas that was later included in the novel. It seems a bit of too much set up.
Then after meeting the Cielcin in the prisons, kinda makes the secret identity part of the first half, which was kinda a part of why he went to the colosseum and still stuck in the planet, useless. He basically revealed himself.
BUT that's where the story became interesting.
Looking forward to the next books, but still thinking if I made the right choice starting/reading this series instead of starting a series like [b:Malazan|55399|Gardens of the Moon (Malazan Book of the Fallen, #1)|Steven Erikson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1548497031l/55399._SY75_.jpg|2646042] or [b:Farseer & Liveship Traders|77197|Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, #1)|Robin Hobb|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1673728072l/77197._SY75_.jpg|171715].

Spoiler
I was enjoying the very first part of this book, the Marlowe homeworld part. It honestly reminds me of the start of [b:The Dragonbone Chair|91981|The Dragonbone Chair (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #1)|Tad Williams|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1704912678l/91981._SY75_.jpg|840191], where it basically sets up the 2/3rds of the novel, just fleshing out the main character a little bit, exploring their home, etc. Then he escaped, was abandoned (first time jump), Cat, the colosseum, etc. Aside from the homeworld part, his solo investigation + Cat part of the novels seems a bit like a bunch of extra stories or novellas that was later included in the novel. This one was interesting, it took a LONG time to take off but the world is interesting and I’m interested in the next book to see where the author takes the world!
