Book is amazing, however it would be a 5 star if there wasn't a very slow section about 60% of the way through the book. Other than that the book was absolutely fantastic.
I have a complicated response to things that are compared to Dune. I liked Dune, but it was almost despite the fact that it was Dune. Books got a lot of issues, but it managed to push through them from sheer force of imagination.
This book is very much in the vein of Dune. If you liked that, you'll probably like this. It's way too long, but it doesn't really feel long. The main character is kind of a jerk, but still manages to keep you on board. The setting is lavished with love. More time is spent with interstitial sets in this book than some other books spend on their primary setting.
It's long, it's a slow burn. It's very imaginative, but the payoff is always somewhere in the future. If you're looking for a clean finish here, it's not happening.
If you have a lot of patience, and you're into turgid Dune-ish sci-fi with a mystical bent, this may work for you.

I picked up Empire of Silence a few years ago with the intention of reading the series. The first book fell flat for me, and I never continued. However, upon rereading it, I found myself enjoying the story much more. Hadrian isn’t the most compelling protagonist—he spends much of the book getting himself into situations that could have been easily avoided if not for his ego-driven mouth. That said, his inner monologue was surprisingly easy to connect with. The world-building is top-notch, and while the prose isn’t perfect, it’s damn near in my opinion. Ruocchio’s ability to translate his world into words—and then into your mind—is masterful, making every location feel vivid and lived in. The political machinations of this galaxy are felt in every conversation, moment and scene helping build a tension that otherwise the story lacks through its own narrative. I’m excited to keep the training rolling. “Always forward, always down, and never left or right.”

The first person writing was the first I’d read for a while so it took some getting use to, along with it being a retelling from the main character. I really enjoyed to world building and different directions the story went. A fairly slow build in to the series all things considered but I am keen to read on without being sure of the direction (despite having the end point perspective).
