Very difficult dull read. Narrator did not help. Pacing was dreadful and little to no action. Felt no attention was given to develop side characters. Would have DNF but saw lots recommend pushing through for other books. Whole book could be summarised too easily.

Very slowly paced, but think of it as a prequel to the series that covers the protagonists back story.

The narrator spoils his own story. Like constantly.

I get why this book is compared to "name of the wind", and I guess I liked it about as much as I liked that book.
Some guy telling his life story from the very beginning, constantly alluding to these amazing things that he will do at some point which just make the current events feel unimportant.
Kind of meandering, like reading a bunch of filler. I seriously doubt his time as a hobo or his time teaching languages to rich kids will be important going forward. I seriously doubt anything that happened in this book will be important, given all the crazy shit this guy is apparently going to get up to in his millenia-long life.

So, I mean, it was fine. I will probably read more.

I didn’t necessarily hate my time with this book, it was just incredibly boring. It suffers from the problem of feeling like it’s going nowhere. Each chapter feels like a snapshot of Hadrian’s life during this period of time. So I think to put it simply, my issue with this book is with its structure. There is no definitive goal to reach at the end, and not an interesting enough story to counter that. The opening and the ending were the most interesting and engaging sections of the book as they felt like Hadrian had something to do. The middle portion of this book just felt like it was meandering for no reason other than to world build.

I’m excited to continue with this series, as I’ve heard many good things about the other books in it. I just hope that these books pick up the pace a little, and start to be more engaging from this point on.
