Niko is a beautiful writer and this was a fantastic read. As an aging punk with similar music tastes, I enjoyed Niko’s loose definition of “dad rock” that included many of my faves including The Replacements, Songs: Ohia, Haim, and Waxahatchee. As a music nerd it was fun to dive deeper into the history of these tracks, but the real beauty of this work is the vulnerability she shares of her trans experience through the exploration of each song. 5 stars!

Ultimately, I’m glad that I read this book. I found it mostly sad to read - in how hard it is for us (the world) to support someone being their full selves. But there is a throughline of hope - that you can find people who will support you and you can have that burning need to do it for yourself. But too many trans people don’t find those supportive people — and it is heartbreaking. There is also a feeling of anxiety in the first 3/4 of the book which made it hard for me to settle but I think it makes sense for the feelings being evoked in the storytelling. I do love reading about people nerd out on what they love and dad rock is no exception. I’m glad I read it.
