god, this book struck the balance beautifully between being music critique and memoir (it helps that i’ve listened to most of the artists covered, and know of nearly all of the rest). favorite essays were, respectively, the mountain goats one and the julien baker one. those are my two favorite artists that were in here, so that’s truly not surprising lol

Im a huge fan of both music criticism and memoir, and any time we get to blend the two is always a good time for me. Here Ms. Stratis blends talking about the dad rock that she still loves and her own experiences as a trans woman growing up. The chapter about Neko Case and "Furnace Song Lullaby" is a standout, but I'm a huge fan of the work as a whole. Definitely worth picking up this summer.
