This is a non-fiction book that reads like a thriller - short chapters, suspense in each one and a build-up to one supreme moment with roadblocks and challenges along the way. The downside is that the characters are as flat as in the average thriller and that there is relatively limited room for depth or thoroughness.

If you are looking for a tome on the nature of East Berlin and the DDR, this is not your book. If you are in for a lively account of a remarkable episode in its history, however, you will love Helena Merriman's work. She shows herself to be an accomplished writer and bases her story on extensive research and many direct contacts with the people involved.

The memories of the Berlin Wall are fading and entire generations have been born after it had come down. Yet events like the war in Ukraine serve as a reminder that the power struggles that defined the clash between East and West still simmer. It may be good to remember that it has made people suffer for many decades now. This book will not help to put the past finally behind us - no single book could achieve that. But it does offer a story of hope, one that might help in surmounting the clash we are facing once again.

Wow this was well researched and written. The narration was well done as well. This was really good insight into the Berlin wall and what families, lovers, friends, and students experienced with the the implementation of the wall and how it changed their lives. I did not have much knowledge on how the wall came to be or the Cold War before reading this. I could really feel what the people experienced on both sides of the wall through this writing.
