i really loved the concept of this book i really did. i read this in 2021 i’m pretty sure over winter break. and i picked up the book and finished all in one day. i loved the concept, the execution? not so much. the book gets a bit repetitive itself, and as much as i loved Leila she a bit childish. although for me i have a bit of an unrealistic view when it comes to my men, i’m also only a sixteen year old who’s definition of romance is what is stated in books i’ve consumed and enjoyed, but that doesn’t mean i don’t have yet another side realistic view on romance. but for a mid 20s gal, i think Leila was still a bit in her fantasy world waiting for the prince of her dreams to come and scoop her up. i LOVE the idea of the book and the way the author wants to bring light to issues of south asian girls and issues with arranged marriage in SWANA in general (south and west asia and north africa). i think it’s just the repetitive attitude of Leila that made the book a bit boring. also the ending feels super rushed. as a muslim gal myself arranged marriage is not something that parents will change their mind about so easily, especially what i’ve heard from desi friends. these are things that are culturally embedded into their membrane it won’t take a little speech at their anniversary party for her parents to go “NOO WE LOVE YOU WE NEVER MEANT IT LIKE THAT!” it’s just very unrealistic. again, i adore the idea of this book i just wish it was excecuted in a better format.

Leila Abid is an American Muslim with Indian parents. Her whole life, she has been told that getting married and have kids is the only way to be happy. At the age of 26, she has kissed a handful of boys but never found someone interesting that she knew her parents would approve of. Her Ammi is tired of waiting and gives Leila a three-month deadline to find a husband on her own or else she will take over.

Leila's attempts at dates were humorous at times, there was the man who yelled 'Bam' to make points and sang, the man that hid under a table, and one that was only interested in talking about himself. While I really enjoyed the dating aspect, I wasn't a huge fan of Leila herself.

Many other reviewers mentioned that Leila annoyed them and I agree. She is a 26-year-old teacher. I would expect her to be more mature. I understand that she wanted Mr Perfect even though many tried to tell her that he didn't exist, but her level of judgement was too high. She would find one flaw and instantly write someone off. It's understandable to a certain extent, she has never truly dated anyone because it was unacceptable for her to be around guys too closely while growing up. However, she acted like a child at many instances. I found myself getting tired of her whining over not being able to find the perfect man.

This was a fun read. I mainly enjoyed the humor and learning more about Indian culture. I would consider reading more from this author in the future.

2.5 - I couldn't finish this no matter how hard I tried. I wanted to like it! I loved the cultural aspects and learning about a new culture, but the main character was so annoying and unlikeable to me. She came off as naive and selfish while trying to find the perfect man to marry in 3 months.
Maybe one day I'll return to this

I loved the story the author was trying to tell but not the execution as much. Still a likeable read though.
