Tried to be deep, but pretty shallow. Also didn't like the audiobook narrator very much. Weird emphasizes on words.

I love reading books by/about South Asian women, as we are often underrepresented. However, this book fell flat for me.

The ending took the cake - it was rushed, didn’t make sense, and felt almost predictable. Leila’s speech at her parents’ wedding anniversary lacked tact & self awareness. That was a conversation she should’ve had in private with her parents, not in front of a huge crowd of people. It also could have been done at the very beginning of the novel…

3,5 star rounded up!

This was a good story about the pressure a Muslim, South Asian girl usually feels regarding marriage.
Is all your self worth in how fast you can get married and have children? There's a lot of great questions about family pressure... How far do you let yourself get pressured?
I'm not a Muslim or from South Asia so it was very interesting to read this!

this book felt personally disrespectful to me. personally offensive. i felt very personally attacked by this book. it's been a long time since i've read a squeaky clean, non-spicy romcom, and i thought this would breathe life back into me. i was bamboozled.

for starters - i am obscenely similar to leila. mid 20s, muslim american, south asian, standards too high, live with my parents, want to teach, have amazing friends i do not deserve, spend way too much time with my head in romance stories expecting a real life fairy tale, am capable of falling in love after just one interaction. it's true, i felt like they had cameras set up and were recording my life to make it into a book. in every respect, this shit hit WAY TOO CLOSE!

so for the first half of this, i had no idea where we were going - who was the male love interest? who is the dark horse that will fall from the sky for her to end up with? i was laughing, giggling, cringing along with her. i was enjoying it so much because i related so much to her. she's immature, but i get it. i can be that way a lot of the time. and the writing style - it was so fun to read, so easy to get through. i flew through this book and i could not put it down.

and then, the ending. if my ass ever gets on stage in front of everyone my family knows to give a speech like that, i am giving you all permission to take. me. out. dont do that!!!! and how did her parents just do such a 180??? and i just felt so bamboozled and robbed. WHERE IS MY HAPPY ENDING! WHAT! THE! FUCK! this some la la land shit. i wanted resolution. i wanted the alternate reality of my life to bask in and hope for. i wanted to like this so bad. but if you take away the rom from the com in the final act of the book, i have no feelings except rage. i hate men! i hate the situation that leila is in! i'm angry! i wanted so much more!! i was BAMBOOZLED!!!
