I appreciate plenty of older novels and plays, but I still find it incredible that, two-hundred years on, Jane Austen's novels are not just insightful, but funny and readable page-turners. This novel went down smoother than pretty much anything I've read this year.

Anne, at seven-and-twenty, thought very differently from what she had been made to think at nineteen. She did not blame Lady Russell, she did not blame herself for having been guided by her; but she felt that were any young person, in similar circumstances, to apply to her for counsel, they would never receive any of such certain immediate wretchedness, such uncertain future good . . .

How eloquent could Anne Elliot have been! how eloquent, at least, were her wishes on the side of early warm attachment, and a cheerful confidence in futurity, against that over-anxious caution which seems to insult exertion and distrust Providence! She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older: the natural sequel of an unnatural beginning.

honestly i liked this classic but felt like it was a bit too slow in the beginning, i could barely understand what was going on till i was halfway through the book. but afterwards, things started making sense and i actually enjoyed reading it, the 3 stars are for the writing, humor and because it's Jane austen.. the 4th star is because of that letter. I was so invested in the relationship between anne and Wentworth

I loved the ending of this book! I am finding that for me with Austen's books it takes me about 60 pages to really get into them - to get used to the language, start remembering all the characters and care about the story. The same held true for Persuasion, but by the end I couldn't put it down. There were some unexpected twists and of course I HAD to know what happened with the love story too :-).
