so beautiful and heartbreaking :’( i couldn’t put this book down, it was everything i imagined and more, i don’t know if i will be able to stop thinking about this story.

the book hooked me from the first chapter! in the present, we are in the middle of a court session to figure out how long would cam be in jail after stabbing nate. in the past, nate met his first, real friend, cam; and we see the sweet adventures they go on, how they learn to trust each other, and how much they change after meeting.

i love the structure of the book: each part of the book is one day of the case. so it starts with the lawyer asking nate to explain the timeline before the fight happened, and then we move into a flashback into the past. the changes between the points of view were so smooth! and i felt like the contrasting views enhanced the story.

i was on the edge of my seat, and the plot twist we got at the end was SO GOOD. the tension was so high, i completely lost my self in the book. i had to read while pacing around my room because i was so nervous for the big reveal. the way the author wrote that was amazing.
Spoiler the entire time the lawyer kept asking “when did cam stabbed you” and then at the end she switched to “when did you aunt stab you, nathan?” I WAS SCREAMING :00 the transition was fucking amazing. you don’t understand how good it was, like i felt like that was the first time i could breath since the beginning of the book.

the ending is bittersweet but realistic :( im sad we couldn’t get the sweet ending i was wishing for since the beginning, but i like the way author did it so much. i agree with every single thing that cam said and they both deserve to be able to go back to their normal lives even if it feels impossible.
Spoiler i love how cam kept saying no and kept his distance despite how much he also wanted it. idk i love the way they said that love doesn’t fix anything and their relationship is horrible. but maybe, just maybe, in a few years when they had time to recover, they could start again :’) so fucking good.

i absolutely love how everything felt so normal at the beginning, but then as you keep reading, you start getting more red flags and hints to what might be happening. we got explanation to every interaction that felt a bit off, and the unreliable narrative thing was so good. the main character kept saying “but she loves me” and “it’s not that bad”, but as the readers we can see that’s it’s actually that bad. it was interesting to have a different pov from nate and being able to see everything going wrong while he was oblivious.

the friendships in the book are so good, aria was fuckinh awesome and i love her so much. she deserves everything!! i just wish her all the best!! she had the most rationale responses from everyone in the book, and she was able to stay nice despite all the madness that happened, and i respect her for that.

the beginning of the book gave me the soft, warm feelings :’) finding true friendship, wanting to spend all the time together, creating a secret language out of jokes that only the two of you understand? so sweet.

it reminded me of the book “we’ll fly away”, so if you enjoyed this book i recommend trying the other one too :)

quotes that i like:

1) “Good walk,” Cam replies. “For the record, that was the most you’ve said since I met you.”
“I don’t do that much talking.”
“You should.”

This story is about Nathan Copeland and how he met his best friend Cameron Hayes, but when Nathan gets stabbed everyone thought it was Cam who did it, but it's soon revealed who actually did it. The book is told in a deposition from Nathan's side, so it's his story and view of the events.

This book was so heartbreaking, but also very realistic in the way that it's told. I loved this book a lot, it's pretty easy to get through because it's broken up into 80 smaller chapters and it was compelling, you wanted to know what happened next. There's a twist that I thought I would be able to see but then I didn't, which made it all the more painful. The two boys also don't end up together in the end which is part of the reason that I think that it's very realistic and contributed to why I liked it a lot more.

wow. seriously wow, this is probably one of the best, most painful books I've ever read. I'm sitting here sobbing my eyes out because it's so good and so real. I just... read this book, please.

Deposing Nathan is a well written novel that flows well and has an interesting story with some intriguing twists and turns. It didn't resonate with me personally, but that is likely more about me than about the novel so I have adjusted my rating accordingly. It's not my normal genre at all; I picked it up following a recommendation on a Different For Boys review stating that this is a far better example of the same basic premise. That is certainly correct.

Deposing Nathan is a story of figuring out and accepting your sexuality, of religion and the codes that bind us, and of family and the abuses they can heap upon us. It's a coming of age tale built around internalised homophobia. And it's one I'd recommend to my younger sisters who are now well into their teenage years. It didn't grab me, but again, I'm not really the intended audience for the novel. Being well into my thirties, comfortably monogamous and a fair few years past that awkward stage of figuring myself out.

It's well done though. There is a tension throughout the novel and the friendships and family ties are well depicted, particularly those that are toxic or abusive. I particularly appreciated how the novel ended. It seemed realistic and true to life, rather than falling into the Disney Happily Ever After. I suspect it won't be the ending that many want. But it is the ending that was needed, the one that truly conveys the damage that has been done throughout.

All in all, a well done novel that will likely speak to others more than it spoke to me. But I'm glad that I read it and I'll certainly recommend it to others.

I read this book in a day. Sure, I felt physically assaulted by it at times, but gosh. I can't really describe what I feel about it. I just know that some of those passages and emotions were worth being held hostage until 3am for.

SpoilerThe Violet reveal was a bit shady, with him saying outright "I'm not going to tell you about her yet." I thought "alright, so that's gonna be a twist later" AND I STILL FORGOT.

PS. If anyone knows who recommended this to me, or where I heard about it, I'd be forever grateful if you let me know.

I loved this! It's an interesting and powerful but also heartbreaking exploration of sexuality, religion, friendship and family. It made me clench my jaw in anger, laugh, cry and think. My faith in YA is restored.
