2.5. this was a drag to get through, just because it wasn’t particularly my taste. i have mixed feelings about ya now. great conversations about the validity of bisexuality though
Wow. Just wow. First time leaving a comment here, but I owe it to Zack Smedley, others who haven't read this book, and the future me ('cause unlike Cam I don't have an eidetic memory, so I'm bound to forget) to say that: this book is everything you need.
You're not really religious? Not struggling to tell the world who you are? Don't enjoy looking at the stars? It doesn't matter. You need to read this, because it will give you an experience you didn't know you needed. Beautiful and realistic writing. Moving. Complex characters.
To anyone who is considering adding this to their 'want to read' shelf, do it now. Buy it now, or borrow it now, or listen to it now, or really anything. It's easy to promise that you won't regret it.
I didn't.

as a member of LGBT comm, the family and friendship dynamics resonates to me. the humor is witty, the dialogues are good! it made me cry and made me wish i could go back to my teenage years and experience the feeling of having a first love--which i've never had.

Loved this book!! Everything here was up to my tastes and I finished it very satisfied with the ending. This story deals with homophobia and justice, we have a flawed main character who's flawed and written in all the right ways.
If you are looking for a young-adult LGBT+ novel to read in the last month of summer, I highly recommend this one. It's intense, it's fluffy, and it's sad at moments, but it will not be a book you regret.

Graphic: Homophobia, Violence
Jesus Fucking Christ, the book was hard for me to read, because it tells the story of two boys who loved each other like crazy, and even so they can’t do anything to stop their relationship from hurt each other.
I have never had anything like these two characters had, not really, but yes in essence. And the last two chapters of the book are making me cry like a baby in consequence. It hit me, very hard.
Now, the book is good. Even if you don’t relate to some of the things it tackles like sexuality, religion, abuse and relationships that turn toxic. I don’t relate to half of these things, but the author makes his character and his voice human enough for me to care even when the main character was a total asshole (which is for a great portion of the book, let me tell ya).
The writing is simple, which is perfect. Writing doesn’t have to be flowery or complex to be impactful. It just has to make you connect to the story, and to seamlessly get you through the it. This story needed its simplicity. And even being simple, it is sometimes beautiful. Like in the freaking last chapter.
This book is important, and I think it’s worth reading. But be warned that the story isn’t pretty, and has many many trigger warnings like the aforementioned toxic relationships, abuse, violence, homophobia, biphobia (both exteriorized an internalized), death of a loved one and.... probably many others. Many of these are also performed by the main character. And it’s ugly.
So be warned. But read it if you can deal with them. It’s worth it.
4.5 stars.
(Still waiting for half stars, Goodreads, even though it’s becoming more of a pipe dream and less of an actual hope....)

This was actually a really good read! I liked how the author played with the chronology, the difficult story he told, and the absolutely awful mother figure who pissed me off for most of the book. 4/5 stars.
