HOLY CR*P.

This was a phenomenal debut book by an author that I just found out is local to me! I was utterly sucked in from the premise and then it took (sadly) two short days of not being able to put the book down for me to finish it. All I can say is that it was a rollercoaster of emotions and THAT TWIST at the end. I was reading it in the lounge at work and gasped so loud that all the air was sucked out of the room. Or at least...that's how I pictured it instead of actually demurely covering my mouth in shock behind the book.

I highly recommend this book. Just saying that it was so good is the understatement of the year.

So I do like YA books. But lately I feel like there are two subgroups of YA books. YA that’s YA because the characters are teens and the stories are universally relatable even if you’re not a teen. And YA that’s intended for teens and doesn’t click for older readers. This was the latter. I can’t imagine if I’d have liked it as a teenager because the teens were nothing like teens I knew, and I found them extremely unlikable. Also their story was not relevant to me and I tended to see the story are a bit stereotypical.

If I’d been a queer boy growing up in a religious family, I may have reacted differently. But I wasn’t and, because there wasn’t much more here for me, I just didn’t really care. It felt a little like the same story we’ve heard a million times as well.
