I didn’t remember particularly enjoying this Wimpey novel when I first read it as a teenager, mainly because I didn’t understand all the bell ringing references. I still don’t - but I can appreciate the plot and characters and their subtleties. I love how vivid and recognisable the Fens are in Sayers’ descriptions as well as rural, ecclesiastical life. And the final scene in the belfry made me cry in anguish. She’s a brilliant writer.
