one of those books where i select it by the title.
I am so connected to and interested in the idea of homesickness - and of course this book has many different ideas of what that means - mostly in relation to others in our life. I started off interested in the book and the characters but I just couldn't stay interested. it just felt meh.

Start and end dates are estimates.
Read about 30 pages and could not get into this story.
The one image that stays with me is of the two students whose lovemaking included placing honey on her nipples. And, as she says, her boyfriend licked off the honey. Slowly.
Wish more of it was as memorable as that bit.

Absolutely loved this book. It was exactly the book I was looking to read when I got back from Israel, and I finally found it. It's heartbreaking, hopeful, a bit maddening, yet full of humor. And I think the next time I have to talk about my feelings on West Bank settlements, I will just point people to Saddiq's story in this book.

A mixture of emotional, heartbreaking narratives from a young couple and the people in their lives. The middle of the book was a bit slow and confusing for me. The entire book, however, was extremely well-written and poetic with truly deep characters. The last 3 pages of the book were meaningful to me.
"I want to start swimming...there's something about swimming that leaves you with more room in your soul. That gives you the natural rhythm of things...I also want to be less cynical...I'm sick and tired of pretending that nothing turns me on just so I don't look pathetic... I want to eat big breakfasts. Like on holidays. I want to start the morning with an enormous breakfast and eat it leisurely, no stressing out. I'm sick of being stressed out. I want to take my time so I can make my time. I want to work hard, but not like a maniac. I want to live in nature... I wan t to stand on the edge of something and see far into the distance, over the rainbow... I want to get turned out by little things... Not to let them pass me by without noticing them. I want love. After two weeks with Nina, I know that I don't have to settle for kiss-fuck-we'll-talk-tomorrow-bye. I want to read more. Ride my bike more. Get on better with my sister. I want to look people in the eyes more. Speak the truth more.
And, besides, I want to go home.
