Certain snippets of this book I really liked. For example, the Indigenous folks winding up the town priest was hilarious and brilliantly written.
Maybe it just wasn't the right time for this book but I found it difficult to keep track of the characters, timelines and connections between various characters and events.

Extraordinarily complex, beautiful, powerful. A little messier than my favorite of erdrich's books, but everything pulls surprisingly together in the end. An energetic and courageous reckoning.

Erdrich's language is gripping and many of her characters stay with you. But the book's era-jumping and thin connections between chapters and characters made for more confusion than clarity.
Some parts of this book were really gripping and many of the characters I really loved and cared about, but with the book jumping around in time and between characters I would get confused at some points.

It’s an interesting exercise to read this early work after reading the absolutely masterful LaRose. There are hints of brilliance, but much is left semi-formed. Uneven, but worth reading.
