“These violent delights have violent ends.”

The ORIGINAL miscommunication trope.

Romeo and Juliet is sharp, witty, hilarious, and packed with some of the most iconic lines in all of literature. The whole play is a masterclass in dramatic irony as you, the reader, know everything that’s about to go wrong, and the fun lies in watching the characters sprint toward certain doom.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I couldn’t stand Romeo and Juliet.
Frankly, I couldn’t wait for them to die.

Mercutio, on the other hand, is the king of my heart. He’s undoubtedly my favorite character and I still cherish the memory of playing him (badly) in my middle school production.

Honestly, I love classics with a looming sense of doom. Even if I hate the characters, I’ll still enjoy watching the incoming car crash.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to finally read this - especially as I loved it so much and got so much more out of it than I expected to! I suppose because the story and its impact is already so well-known I thought it would be interesting to finally read the original, but actually it hit me so hard in terms of just what a heartbreaking portrayal of young love and bittersweet innocence it is. I can't really articulate why it had the effect on me it did, but I suppose it just scratched such an itch in my brain and really struck me how timeless a story it is (as Shakespeare's writings always are!). Definitely one I'm so excited to now read again and again!
