I had the honor to have in my hands the first edition of this book (1898). Bosie uses a pen name here, the Belgian Hare. These are cautionary tales about animals, most of which tend to be rather dangerous and untrustworthy. The illustrations by E.T. Reed are simply marvelous, very detailed and old fashioned.

I would very much like to know what inspired this poetry. Was he thinking of certain individuals for each one?

Some verses I liked:

The Elephant
“No beast with him can well compare,
Except, of course, the Belgian hare. “

The Shark
“He watches you take off your clothes,
And not the least excitement shows.”

The Eagle
“To cause pain is his inky care;
How different from the Belgian hare!”

This tales are funny and lighthearted.
Suitable to read to children. The images are beautiful. Really loved this edition.
