enjoyed the start and stuggled adjusting to the writing for a while, but the pay off was definitely worth it. I'm excited to continue on.

This beastly behemoth of a book is a bleedin back breaker, but a good one.

Winter is approaching (coming), magic is reawakening and ice-like creatures are making their way south from beyond the mountain (wall) in the north to throw a wrench into the petty political squabbles of a vaguely British/Celtic/Roman continent called Osten Ard (Westeros)..
Can't see how George RR Martin found this inspiring... Alas, like Towser the jester in all his cheek, I had to poke fun.

The lizardbone throne is a big book for lovers of epic fantasy at its most epic and classic. Epically classical, classically epic.
An obvious stepping stone in the evolution of the genre between Tolkien and Martin, with some truly magical prose, it's a must read for fans of the genre. If, like me, you want to be a student of epic fantasy of sorts and read your way through the important works, this book is compulsory on that cool curriculum.
It is a beast of a tale, with the mythical quality of Tolkien and the unraveling political complexity of GRRM. The prose and narrative structure lean towards a modernised style but with generous sprinkles of old-school flavour. It is dated in minor details, but flows so much smoother than Tolkien in my humble opinion. Tad has no real desire to thrust the reader into a breakneck, propulsive plot and is content to sit and bask in the richness of the world, but he does not lack for depth of character. For a winter read beneath a blanket, and a cat on your lap, this is quite simply the perfect book.

3.5 stars. This would have been a 4 star book if there was just a few less songs and characters reading out of book to each other. The ending was great though, and I look forward to reading the next book.

My biggest take a way from this book are the idioms. Seriously, they are great and I’m looking forward to implementing them in my day to day life now.

An Interesting story hidden in an overly long and a little tedious book......
