Loved it!

I devoured this. The characters are so believable, especially the villain. So good! Lots of twists and turns. Kept me hooked the whole time.

A captivating introduction to The Mist King series, Of Mist and Shadow introduces us to Tessa, a strong willed and defiant woman who is working against the notoriously brutal King Oberon by stealing his gemstones. After catching her in the act, and having punished her father for treason with beheading years prior, Tessa fears her punishment only to be let free. This act is not out of kindness, and instead she is chosen to be his bride, a fate worse than death. She knows she must escape, but is fleeing into the protection of her gemstone contact better than staying with King Oberon?

+ Hidden Identities
+ Enemies to Lovers
+ Dual POV
+ Who Hurt You?
+ One Bed
+ Found Family

I am absolutely invested in this series. I was hooked with the tropes alone, but the found family aspect when it's the people you believe to be your enemies? Doubting everything you have ever been told? Coming to love your enemy? It was perfection. Knowing that this is a series, and a lengthy one at that, I am grateful for a slowburn as it gives the dynamic between the main characters time to build. The world building was fantastic, and gave me a lot of questions about the neighboring lands which lends to more in a series, and I will (almost) never say no to more stories.

The only thing I didn't liked was the miscommunication trope. I know that it adds to the drama and the continuation of the plot, but it hurts me to my core. Tessa is quite naive, so she gets a kinda pass, but not entirely.

Another complaint, how can you just leave it off on that cliffhanger!? I was already invested! I was going to keep reading!

Thank you to Jenna Wolfhart for the ARC!

Book Review…Of Mist and Shadow by Jenna Wolfhart

This was a great read! This is one of my first books by Jenna Wolfhart and I ended up finishing it in about thirteen hours!

When the vicious fae king catches Tessa stealing his powerful gemstones, he demands a cruel punishment. She must leave her family and friends behind and become his future human bride. But when she escapes, someone far worse finds her. The lethal Mist King, the enemy fae who trapped her people beneath the reign of King Oberon in the first place. The one who destroyed human cities and watched them burn. He takes her captive and then offers her a deal. Become the first mortal to kill a fae king, and he will free her people.

Tessa is an interesting character. She's stubborn, strong and feisty! Her determination and the strength that she finds with her family is one of my favorite things about her! Kal "The Mist King" so far his character intrigues me. I don't think we have gotten the whole picture with him yet! The world and the creatures are quite interesting and you get very good descriptions so it is easy to get a clear picture! With the way the book ended it will be interesting to see what will happen in the next book and honestly I can really think of anything I didn't enjoy about the book except for the fact that I have to wait till December to read the second one! Thank you Paper Myths for sharing this book with me!

I received this digital ARC from netgalley for an honest review!

3.5/5

I really liked this book I see a lot of potential for this series. This is the first book from this author that I’ve read and I’m definitely intrigue to check out her other reads. So let’s talk about what I liked and I well didn’t…

This book is difficult to rate because while the writing isn’t great… it’s not terrible either? And the plot is just intriguing enough to keep me reading. It has all of the ingredients of a good book but it isn’t assembled as well as it could be.

As some other reviewers mentioned, there were tropes tossed in Willy nilly that weren’t fleshed out well enough to create the desired effect. It feels like time is spent on details that don’t matter and then other parts are rushed.

Still, it kept me reading and the ending cliffhanger got me to grab the next book immediately. Since it’s available on KU, I had no qualms about continuing the series.

It’s funny because before I came to review this book I didn’t even notice that I’ve read a series by this author before— the Demons After Dark: Covenant series. I felt similarly about that one— it got me interested enough to read through some shoddy writing because overall it was enjoyable. However that series had a seriously lame ending so I’m hoping this one is better.

Meh. That’s all I can really say. The series wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either. It’s a comfortable read, predictable but nicely written. It is definitely a good series to keep on retainer if you just want something to read. I wouldn’t recommend it if you want something thought provoking or with a lot of depth, but it’s a nice auto pilot read when you’re putting off your TBR. With about 400 pages a book, it makes it a quick and manageable series without losing too much time. The final book in the series comes out this fall, so I’ll definitely finish it but I’m not gonna be rushing to snag it right away. Overall, 3.2/5 and 1/5 for spice.
