“Pierre was right: if you want to be happy, you have to believe in the possibility of happiness, and I do believe in it now. Let the dead bury the dead, but while ever there is life, you must live and be happy."
"Kings are the slaves of history.
History - the amorphous, unconscious life within the swarm of humanity - exploits every minute in the lives of kings as an instrument for the attainment of its own ends."
"Love gets in the way of death. Love is life. Every single thing I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is - everything exists - only because I love. Everything is bound up with love, and love alone."
se eu amasse menos esse livro poderia falar mais sobre ele…… mas sendo as coisas como são sei lá sabe ele tem 1358 páginas esses personagens são meus pais filhos sobrinhos vou sentir tanta saudade deles

Just started reading this, and it feels almost like a continuation of the newly-translated ANNA KARENINA, so distinctive is his tone.

This is quite the story. My only complaint really is that there a large swathes of pages that drag because the book diverts from being a story and turns into a treatise on whatever subject Tolstoy is talking about through his characters - the book unfortunately ends this way too, which leaves a somewhat sour flavor. The story is very interesting that has engaging plots and characters, and spans a massive amount of time. There is a point toward the end - during the epilogue actually - where it feels like the story should’ve ended a while ago, but it isn’t bad - just long.

Tolstoy, oh you brilliant man!!
"Who is right and who is wrong? No one! But if you are alive—live: tomorrow you'll die as I might have died an hour ago. And is it worth tormenting oneself, when one has only a moment of life in comparison with eternity?”

Haven't picked this up in 8-9 months so moving from paused to DNF. I just wasn't interested in it; maybe I'll try again in a few years, but probably not.
