Scritto in maniera secondo me davvero magistrale, questo classico senza tempo continua a rivelarsi attualissimo.
Un po' lenti i capitoli sulla guerra e in particolare sulle battaglie, in cui sono andato un po' a rilento. Sono compensati da quelli in cui si parla della vita di corte, che sono invece tutti chirurgici per come indagano l'animo dei personaggi.
Qualcuno di loro scompare (Boris, che fine fa?), altri muoiono, altri risorgono. Il finale (del romanzo) colpisce fortissimo in un punto debole per credo tutti i figli. Il finale (del saggio) invece pallosissimo: ripete le stesse idee che con più chiarezza e sintesi aveva difeso a metà libro.

3.5 stars—fascinating read, but maybe not worth 1500 pages. Enjoyed the character development the most (Pierre Bezukhov is essentially a Russian Winnie the Pooh).

Genuinely so good,.and even the essays on history and morality and the wheels of time are tolerable in how they connect to the entire story, like yeah! I also think taking Tolstoy's "Everything is out of our control, it's all been predestined" and balancing with, say, Butler's "God is change, you can shape God" is very important.
