Really enjoyed the mixed genres of this book, journal, narrative and free verse. A legend retold that questions colonialism, the role and nature of women and love. There is nothing fairy tale about this mermaid story.

The writing was bad and hard to follow. I believe it was stylized for speech but it was super hard to follow and understand. Would be better as an audiobook than read as a novel.

This book was fine. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it and then a couple more to not be as into it anymore.
I liked the overarching plot and like the characters overall but I was really disappointed by the emphasis of how having sex made her into a real woman and how she bled after the first time she had sex. They just weren't necessary and too away from the plot if anything. It would have been much more interesting if she'd been cursed for being so alluring and also really good at sex.
I was debating whether to round up or down but have decided that the main reason it's 2.5 and not 2 stars is because of the overall plot of her being a mermaid and turning back into a women then back to women rather than the writing style or more detailed plot. I doubt I'd read this again.

Surprising, unexpected and moving. Unique writing style and voice. Not the story I expected, but brilliant.
