I always have seen Matt Murphy on shows like 20/20, but I didn’t know he had written a book until I heard him on the podcast, Small Town Dicks. I’m so glad I read his book. He gave an interesting insider take on some of his cases through the years while working on the Homicide Unit and also as a prosecutor at the DA’s office, while also reflecting on his personal life.

This book is a collection of cases Matt Murphy was involved in, each getting a chapter.
Checked this out at the library after hearing Matt Murphy on Small Town Dicks podcast, retelling the story detailed in chapter 4. Honestly, I liked his podcast episode better than this chapter. Probably because the cases were new to me, I was enthralled by the other chapters.
I have a theory that attorneys are generally good writers, and Murphy credits writing partner Jeremy Blachman. For a true crime book, this one digs pretty deep into how cases are built and how the investigations come together. I read it IRL hardcover, and truly couldn’t put it down.

When I was in high school, I happened to see part of a court case tried by Murphy. It struck me even then how passionate and invested he was as a prosecutor. When I saw he’d written a book about his time in the homicide unit, I knew I’d want to read it. I enjoyed how Murphy primarily focused on the cases but also gave us snippets of his personal life as it made him more relatable.
There are plenty of fascinating, sad, and interesting cases and trials discussed here, some I knew a little of and others that were new to me. I liked learning more about the prosecutorial process and found the writing engrossing. A great read for any true crime reader.
I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

The procedural policy and legal work is fascinating. I found the author somewhat pompous.
