the pacing and narration was really strange/choppy, and the characters were barely likeable (especially belly)… I’m glad they made all the changes they did in the show - jenny han’s writing has improved a lot since this was released, it barely feels like the same story and that’s definitely for the best 😭

Book was kind of mediocre, but 4 stars because I enjoyed reading Belly’s narrative and internal monologue of scenes I’ve watched in the show

Contrary as what an instagram feed full of series content wanted me to believe, this book is not a romance book, but a coming-of-age book. It's about things changing as you get older, not just for Belly, but for all of them.
Of course, Belly also spends some time in this book dating and thinking about dating, because that's one of the big changes for her in the beginning of the book. People start to notice her and see her as a girl in her own right, so she is finally getting included in the social life of the teens that is happening at cousins beach, where her family and the family of her mother's friend Susannah are spending their summers. This also means that boys are starting to be interested in dating her and she starts being interested in dating them.
While Belly is living her pretty summer, back in the house they're all staying together, Susannah's son Jeremiah is doing everything his older brother Conrad used to do last summer, and Conrad is being moody and drinking alcohol and smoking all of a sudden. Also, there is something going on with Susannah that Belly doesn't pick up on, but the reader gets enough hints to know to pay attention.
And so Belly has to adapt to these people and her relationships to them changing, and that summer can't stay the way it always had.

I remember not picking this book up when I was the target age group because it didn't appeal to me. Now everything that turned me off then, is what I appreciate about this book now. It catches teen girls who don't feel pretty, but have this fantasy of having this one moment, where finally they transform from an ugly duckling into a swan and everyone suddenly wants to date you, and then gives them a deeper coming of age story, where Belly gets this moment of being noticed, but she also has to figure out how to deal with all of the more adult emotions that come with getting older and approaching being an adult, as well as with getting this attention both from people she wants this attention from and from people who she doesn't want this attention from.

I am way too old for this book, but I enjoyed myself nonetheless, and I could see clearly what it was doing, and it did it really well, and so I am still giving it 5 stars.
Wild, but yes, it is a really good book.

⭐️ 1

the summer i turned petty would prolly made more sense. i just read this before i start tsitp season 1 and this is really chaotic. the plot is just scattered all over the place, we're literally jumping from one plot to another that idek what's happening

I watched this series on Netflix so I thought I would try out the books. Usually a book is almost always better, but this one was hard to finish. It could possibly be because I already know the ending. I was hoping to get more insight on Conrad and Jeremiah, but nothing new. Will continue the book series.
