Lyrically written, this is the story of Grace Porter at several major crossroads of her life. 3 stars because we spent too much time inside Grace's head.

I found it hard to understand Grace's attachment to her father when he comes of as such an asshole for most of the book, and hard to understand Grace herself and her reaction to her situation at the beginning. And it annoys me in fictional media when a character is supposed to be doing an interview or a radio show or eating a meal but the dialogue given would not stretch even like a minute and it's so unrealistic. (in this case a character has a radio show that appears to be her monologuing for about 2 minutes and that is it) But I persevered and ended up not having a bad time with it.

Such a fun premise, such an insufferable book.

A type-A Black lesbian woman in STEM gets married while drunk in Vegas? It’s a great set-up. But this book has no tension of any consequence. After reconnecting in chapter 3, Grace and her new wife are immediately on board with their relationship. There’s no navigating their dynamics as a couple, struggling through the differences they wouldn’t have seen in the few hours before they got married. It feels utterly unbelievable.

Any conflict that emerges between characters is immediately resolved and never comes up again. Throw a drink in your friend’s face? Doesn’t matter. Four pages later, it’s back to meaningless quippy banter.

The language was repetitive (Grace Porter, sea salt and sage, love you so much it hurts, honey girl, star girl, space girl) and the characters all shades of the same quirky and insufferable. Oh my god I had to drag myself through this book.
