honey girl was so different from what i expected. first things first, gorgeous cover that i am in love with. it follows grace porter, a black woman in her late 20s who’s trying to figure out what her future holds for her after receiving her doctorate in astronomy. i really think it’s more of a coming-of-age than a romance book even though the romance contributes to grace’s character growth. i imagine a lot of the themes would be quite relatable to many readers.

- most of the growth is done close to the end, but i do think it’s a good build up and it doesn’t feel too rushed.
- fleshed-out, likable side characters and that they were all given their due time and background (i am a sucker for south asian representation and was pleasantly surprised)
- details parental expectations & how as we mature into adulthood, we begin to view our own parents as complex people with unique identities and backgrounds that form them, not just our support system or the people we look up to and trust wholeheartedly

it was overly sentimental at times with some of the dialogue, and borderline cringey at times. i highly doubt you call your partner “___ girl” or their full name every time you speak to them. yuki as a whole was a bit much with her podcast/narrative show. i understand that it was supposed to showcase authentic vulnerability but all the monster jargon was lost on me and didn’t drive home the point as well as it intended to

however at other times, the writing invoked really beautiful and vivid imagery (seas, spices, tea, salt & herbs, florals and orange groves, hues of gold and yellow, champagne dreams, etc). i really think this could be a great adaptation into a movie or miniseries.

for a debut novel, it’s really quite good!

This character’s journey throughout the book is so fantastic!! Love:))
