The book is boring. The best part is the opening that kind of sucks you in and then it falls apart. The author repeated the main characters name, Grace Porter, over and over throughout the text. She also made several “I’m a Porter that’s what we do” statements that fell flat. Those were repeated numerous times in the book as well. Her friendships don’t feel believable. For someone who got drunk married in Vegas I can care less about what happens or why.

3 star book with 4 star moments. Main character was frustrating at times. This book didn’t hit the way I expected it to!

3.5 --> 4 Stars.
A highly anticipated book turned out to be a strong debut and a lovely read.
Honey Girl was not what I thought it would be; going in, I expected a queer little love story of circumstance. Instead, I received a strong adult coming-of-age story, love sprinkled within.
I found myself relating a lot to Grace, and read this at a time where I was heavily thinking about the future, instead of living in the moment - as much of that one can do during a pandemic, at least. Honey Girl was a nice touch that made me feel validated and like I belonged, so I am very grateful for that.
I liked most characters, understood where many came from. If you are looking for a soft read that feels like sunshine on your skin after a late afternoon nap, this is it.

7.9/10: There are many lines in this book that just hit so hard, and others where it feels a little corny at times. I enjoyed the POC representation and I felt that Grace and Yuki had a good chemistry. The pang of loneliness and confusion on the future was very powerful and poignant, though repetitive at times.
