The Mime Order is the second book in The Bone Season series, and while I enjoyed The Bone Season more, I think this is one of the strongest second books I’ve read in a long series. I’m going to try to share my thoughts without spoiling much, but be warned if you haven’t read book 1.

Our sequel picks up immediately after the end of book one and you are thrust back into the aftermath of our intense conclusion in book one. At this point in the series, we are building up the part of the world we only got a taste of in book 1. The crime syndicate, the underground that Paige is such a large part of, and how it will work into the larger picture of this world.

Paige wants to do something to stop the Rephs, this world, the government; however, sometimes it feels like she is the only one. That is her battle in this book. Figuring out how to rebel, if she can, and if she should. It’s her struggling to decide should she step up or assimilate back to her old life, or if that is even a choice. AND I LOVE HER STRUGGLE. Does that make me a bad person? I love Paige so much, and I find her reactions to feel so interesting and realistic. She’s not necessarily a dumb character and she prioritizes things in a way I find very remarkable, respectable and more realistic than is often found in fiction.

I love all that we learn in this world, and the reread showcased how much I truly missed the first time around. This is the point in the story where I really started to have predictions about the series moving forward and that is so exciting. The reread put so much more into light. This is the reason you reread books. I loved this book MORE than I did the first time around (and it was still a 5/5 stars during my first read through). That’s such an incredible feat.

Also, one of my favorite quotes of all time is found in this book. “Words are everything. Words give wings even to those who have been stamped upon, broken beyond all hope of repair.”

It was a little slower than the first one. Still an amazing story just this book was more world and character building than action.
