i'm done. that was incredible. i'm crying, why am i crying, i knew they were going to die. aaaaaaah.
i think i prefer the first book in this duology, although it's not by much because this book is truly magnificent. i knew what i was getting myself into when i found out this was a romeo and juliet adaptation, but the ending still knocked the wind out of my lungs in the best possible way.
so many other parts of this book is also incredible: kathleen's relationship with the communist party and how she fights for them, rosalind's complicated relationship with the scarlets and the city itself, the complex grief that benedikt has over losing marshall and the beautiful climax of their relationship, all set in a city that can't help but tear itself to pieces.
really beautiful and definitely worth rereading.
before reading: i'm expecting a lot. i'm ready for emotional devastation.

Wasn't as bad as the first book but still bad enough for me to give a 2 stars. Juliette was SLIGHTLY less annoying this time around and um I liked the ending
Adorei este Mundo de Monstros e Gangsters em Xangai! Muito Bom!
Eu sabia que era inspirada na obra de Romeu e Julieta mas não era preciso levar tão à letra

These Violent Ends 4'25/5 ⭐️
Most of the time the second book is not the best or it ruins the characters or it's just boring. But no, this book is better than the first and I have to take off my hat to Chloe, for her story to stand for herself and not be ruined.
I loved every page and every character is amazing and so well written.
At first, I didn't know how to feel about the ending, I was just in shock that was the last chapter, I didn't expect to jump to the epilogue directly after... that... It's an open ending and I usually don't like them but in this book, I think everyone can have their own opinion on how the book ends and you can think like Ben or you can think like Alisa.
Did it change my life? No
Did I feel sad about it? Yes
Did I cry like a baby? No
Was the story worth reading? Yes
It's such a nice world to dig in just a few books and I would have loved it there was a third but I get it why there isn't

Holy shit this book took me MONTHS to finish i started and dnfed it so many times ive been trying to read it since 2023/2024 it’s now 2025. i enjoyed the first half but also didn’t. Like nothing about this plot wise was enjoyable. i enjoyed the character interactions way more than the actual plot and i also like couldn’t give a fuck about the ending at all like all of that build up for this???? i also couldn’t care for the epilogue either like boohoo idgaf
