This was great but dare I say too long?

In the first book I wasn’t sure how I felt about the ties to R&J but now that I’ve done the whole series, I think I’m ok with it. I think it classifies as more of a fan fic that took a few elements and then just ran in a completely different direction. And on the whole, I think I do appreciate the additional commentary on Shanghai in the 20s.

The ending was perfect.

Really liked this take on Romeo and Juliet.

So much tension and made me cry like a baby. Enjoyed this much more than the first installment.

This rarely happens but book 2>book 1 (sorry, not sorry).

It was truly a great way to tie everything in a neat little bow, the plot was rushed towards the end, but in a good way. The pace of it was just leaving me at the edge of my seat, which was [robably why it only took me two days to read everything.

staying true as a retelling of a great classic, I loved how the ending was vague but as Alisa Montagova said;

"War rages on, and the city tells the tale of Roma and Juliette like some folk song passed between rickshaw runners on their breaks. They speak of Roma Montagov and Juliette Cai as the ones who had dared to dream. And for that, in a city consumed by nightmares, they were cut down without mercy.”

Ok Chloe Gong, I see you. Come for the romance and monsters, stay for the semi- historical fiction.
Also love that there was not attempt to provide translations of the Mandarin that's spoken. That annoys me in books when authors are forced to repeat the foreign language sentences into English. No one says the same thing twice like that.
But thank you for minimal French.
