honestly who is really surprised that i have this book a five star. i couldn’t have rated it any lower than that. also let me just say George R.R. Martin wishes he could write bittersweet endings like Chloe Gong did. this book had been my most anticipated read of 2021, so much so that i struggled to pick it up when it arrived right after it came out. i was so excited to read it but it’s for that same reason that i couldn’t pick it up, i was scared to see where the characters would end up but i also didn’t want the duology to end. there’s no doubt that this is one of my top 5 favourite series ever, placing chloe gong as one of my auto-buy authors. once i’d finally pick the book up in december i couldn’t put it down, i managed to read almost 300 pages in one sitting before i had to go to bed because it was about 1am that night. the next day i knew that if i carried on with it i would’ve finished it then and there so i didn’t read a single page after, because if i didn’t carry on reading it would mean it wasn’t over (i know very dramatic). chloe has a way of writing a book that mirrors r&j whilst still very much keeping it original and having us readers wondering what happens next despite having a reference when it comes to the original play.
although both the play and duology aren’t comedies, chloe still manages to add humour into the books without making them feel out of place, even during scenes full with tension, and making me laugh so hard which is something i appreciated so much about this book. i don’t want to spoil anything which i know i would if i talked about my favourite things about this book in terms of the characters so i’ll leave it for my full spoilery review that i’ll post on my goodreads, blog and likely make a guide on the series as a whole before foul lady fortune comes out
