Wow. This was such a great ending to the duology and I absolutely loved the wild ride it took me on! This one had so many big moments that pulled at my heart and literally had me in tears. It is written beautifully and each character becomes so special and important to the story. I can’t wait to read the spin off series and get even more from this story!
I loved how the actual history played a bigger part in this book (I've read some books about Chinese communism way, way back, and I've always found those interesting, so I was happy to see some of the origins of that back in this book). The Romeo & Juliette story played out far more in this book, what I loved too. The ending was very satisfying...

Ok fine, I read the second book. I liked it a little better because I think the political and historical context was a little clearer and more relevant. However, the teen romance still felt cringey and forced, and I didn't love the characters. SpoilerThe ending, which honestly everyone should've seen coming if they know Romeo x Juliet, didn't really affect me emotionally, which is a huge flag of me not being invested in the futures of these characters.

i literally don't think there is anything i can say to properly express how this book made me feel other than Holy Shit
why did i fool myself into thinking a romeo and juliet retelling would have a happy ending? absolute clown. i am devasted and can’t stop thinking about it. but otherwise i really loved this duology
