An incredible audio book! What really drew me in was seeing how Tara’s perception of the world shifted as she became more educated. The portrayal of the constant balancing act between the long-term beliefs she was raised with vs the new discoveries she was making was both fascinating and  heartbreaking.

My heart broke for her so many times. The trauma she and her family experienced was shocking, often really difficult to hear, but written in such an honest and moving way that it never felt sensationalised.

I was especially struck by her father. For all his delusions, shaped by bipolar disorder and extreme Mormon beliefs, there were moments of genuine love and heartfelt care that came through. Those glimpses of clarity made the whole story feel even more complex and human. Overall a very powerful book to listen to and may need to get my hands on a physical copy to reread in future.

A poignant autobiography of Tara Westover’s life, from childhood to getting her PhD. This one is really inspiring and captivating. She catches a lot of nuance of living with complex childhood trauma and how difficult it can be to unbox.
