This is the most beautifully written book I have ever read. The care, honor, and reverence that the author holds for the groups that inform the characters in her book is obvious. It is rare that an author can effectively make a place of geographic location a character that also evokes emotion and empathy, yet, she does it. This is a book that I didn’t want to put down, but the heaviness of the content sometimes forced me to. Additionally, this is a book that you don’t want to rush. Instead, grab a pen, a highlighter, and some sticky notes, and follow the people of Chicasetta, GA.

Damn. Miss Honorée did the damn thing! This is THE great American epic. I really took my time with this and savored. There is tenderness and rawness and depth and love and pain -- all articulated so skillfully. How did we get here? Jeffers delivers an ode to that tenet of humanity, legacy, history. I hope everyone reads this book.
