The science is definitely on the might-as-well-be-magic end of things, but I don't have any particular need for hard science (or even the pretense of same) in my space adventure. There are ships and horrifying weapons no one in their right minds would invent and super easy designer body modification and a planet of untold riches if only it can be found again. You know, the usual.

It took me a while to decide to read this because of the whole everyone having secrets thing, but - minor spoilers, I guess - it does not lead to some kind of annoying falling out among the main characters that could've been avoided if anyone had even a grain of sense. (Also, people all had perfectly good reasons for their secrets.)

I'm not keen on the abusive relationship side plot, and I do think people should be aware of it, even if it isn't that much of the book. Other than that, it's all pretty standard space adventure shenanigans, and I enjoyed it. Well enough to seek out the sequel.

3.5? 3.75?
I genuinely enjoyed this, which I didn't expect to for some reason. I think perhaps the cover does it a disservice. I'd class this as 'SF lite', so don't go in expecting hard SF and you'll have much more fun.

So, I've finally finished Stars Uncharted!

I originally found this book while browsing in Barnes and Noble, and started reading it for the dual POV category of a reading challenge. I have to say, if I hadn't been counting it as part of a reading challenge, I would not have finished it. The story starts off strong - the scenes from Nika's point of view grabbed me and wouldn't let go - but then, as we start getting more into the scenes from Josune's point of view, the whole story slows down. This book would have been three stars, if not for the fact that action picked up again in the last quarter of the book and the end of the story has an excellent plot twist. All told, Stars Uncharted was a ok book, but it's not one that I would reread or recommend, and I will likely be donating the copy that I purchased to my local library. Maybe somebody else will like it more than me.

This book was riveting! I admit that I would get confused with which of the characters was getting injured, due to the machinations of Nika Rik Terri in body modding. Add in double crossing star ship mates, corrupt police force and politicians, plus regular old fashioned low life thugs.

Stars Uncharted was action packed, which made for a quick read since I was unable to put down the book and neglected my real life until I finished.

This was a perfect summer read. Stars Uncharted provides an escape from our real world, and yet it delivers plenty of social norms to ponder. I have seen other reviewers comment that Nika concentrates too much on physical beauty in her body modding activities, and I agree with those reviewers that this aspect was something I considered detrimental. On the other hand, this gave me an opportunity to mull over why it was an issue for me; it's never a bad thing to work through our prejudices.

Now I'm off to explore the Linesman series by S. K. Dunstall!

Thank you to First to Read for providing an advance copy of Stars Uncharted in exchange for an honest review.

It fizzled a bit at the end, and the big plot twist you could see miles away, but other than that it was a decent sci-fi and entertaining read that kept me engaged from beginning to the end.
