Use as an interactive read aloud about predictions, but the predictions aren't what we think they are!

Oh, Ms. Pham, you had me from the moment you made the cover art reminiscent of a Golden Book. I was all set to love this sweet story with the big-eyed, kind little mouse who bakes a birthday cake for Little Bird, but then -
you made it incredibly awesome with the unexpected, clever surprises! Each time you set us up to call out the obvious answer and then you deliver a twist that gets us giggling. Reminds me of "Guess Again" by Mac Barnett and Adam Rex, but this one has a strong plot and internal logic as well as laffs.
I'll read this to any age for fun, but it's terrific as a mentor text to show how to set up and deliver the unexpected.
LOVE!

Mouse makes a cake for Little Bird's birthday, but as he goes to deliver it, he comes across several neighbors who want some cake as well. They trade Mouse for things that don't seem especially useful, until he doesn't have any cake left. Little Bird is not disappointed, though. These things will help! But how? This is a fun story with a classic feel and colorful illustrations.

Great illustrations and I liked that the trades were never the expected items, but the story sure takes a dark turn when Mouse & Bird ask Chicken for her eggs...

A kind mouse ends up trading away pieces of Little Bird's birthday cake but manages to wisely trade them back in order to make another cake for Little Bird. Some of the twists were very fun. And I enjoyed Pham's illustrations.
