Filled to the brim with puns, shallow jokes and even some hidden ambiguities this seems more like the parody of a children’s book – and I love it! Even the illustrations reveal some secrets – like the satirical depiction of a well known German literary critic.

The plot is harmless and charming, just like you’d expect it to be, but the humour definitely makes this one stand out for me.

I really liked it but the plot conveniences were a little too visible for me. And having read this after Momo I'm sort of getting the feeling that when you have read one book by Ende, you've read all of them. Plot-wise, at least. Or at least in the sense of how the plot is finally resolved.
And there were some problematic things, like fat-phobia. But I was able to let those slide a little because the book is kinda old.

It's a lovely book with a message that only gets more important as time goes on: How humans destroy each other and their environment, how we all need to work together to save the planet but also how the blame should be placed on corporations and capitalism and not the individual.

I have very fond childhood memories of this book. I loved it and I still keep it in my bookshelf and re-read it every once in a while. While it is really fun for children this is by no means only a children's book and holds some wisdom that grown ups shouldn't ever forget :).
