Veronica Fish’s art in Slam! was fantastic and really added a lot to the comic. Pamela Ribon’s storytelling, however, was lackluster. The characters were hard to connect to and were very flat and the plot was almost nonexistent. It was a confusing and disappointing read. I had high expectations because I love roller derby, so maybe that made it easier to be let down. I will read the second volume sometime in the future to see if it improves.

I absolutely loved this. It makes me wish there were more derby teams in Australia and that I wasn't so nervous to try skating with others. The art style is so amazing and it totally shows the spirit of skaters.

Makes me miss smith crew. I know they are different sports. The camaraderie is the same.

I used to love reading Ribon's descriptions of getting into roller derby on her blog, like, a million years ago. This was a really fun read with great colors and nuanced characters. I think it could work for teens (there's one mention of consensual sexy times, but it happens off page), depending on their curiosity about roller derby.

A friends-to-enemies-to-friends story of two roller derby newbies struggling to balance work, bouts, and relationships. The art style is really nice, and the derby jargon was easy to understand. Both girls are in college.
