beautiful colors and lovely artwork are not enough to make up for a sloppy story that doesn't flesh characters out enough to make the drama interesting. i really disliked that the only black woman w/ anything important to do in the story is painted as overly aggressive and angry. also having a roller derby story with no dykes should be a crime.

I found the book cover to this when reading a completely different book about a records store. So I stubbled upon it at my local library and I got the first two books of the series to give it a try and it did NOT disappoint. I’m familiar with this sport and I think it’s pretty fucking cool plus I love the film Whip It.

A fantastic story paired with fantastic illustrations, conveys the sisterhood (and all its complexities) of roller derby teams. Jennifer and Maisie develop a deep bond at Fresh Meat tryouts. When they earn spots on opposing teams and find themselves drawn into different circles, it challenges the strength of their friendship. They love, they struggle, they triumph. Slam! kicks so much ass! Can't wait for the next installment!

This was a fantastic start of a series. It was a lively combination of derby and friendship. They explained the rules of derby and the spirit behind the sport. It also touched on elements of friendship and how we interact with our friends and how to be there for each other. Just a great read. Looming forward to volume 2 whenever that comes out.
