maybe 3.5 stars. Definitely one of the better derby graphic novels. Felt characters and story could have been fleshed out more; really liked art. Will def read next volume.

I love this. But. The relationship from friendship to enemies to friends again between the two main women felt really rushed. Actually the whole comic itself felt a little rushed in its pacing.

I love reading about roller derby. This gives a great snapshot of what it's like to get started, threaded through a narrative of friendship and finding your community.

The 4 first issues of Slam in one volume, so while it doesn't exactly have a full narrative ending, it definitely has a satisfying enough place to stop. Knockout and CanCan (Jen and Maisie) meet at Fresh Meat training for roller derby. They are new to the sport, and bond over the experience. Both get drafted, but to different teams, and things get messy in their friendship. The characters are mostly “new adults”: old enough to live alone but without having everything figured out yet. I like a comic with action that isn't gory or deadly, and I'd love to see more of this derby comic.

This is a fast-paced and fun comic, and I wouldn't mind pickig up the next volume. It wasn't the most special thing ever, my life has not been changed, but I did really enjoy it. The story arc of this volume centers on female friendship which is a topic I love seeing handled well in stories, and I think it was here. As I said, this is really fast-paced, so there is sometimes something missing in the complexity, nuance and depth of the exploration of friendship (and everything else), which is why this isn't getting a higher rating. However, it did give me exactly the fun time I wanted from it when I picked it up, so if this review comes across as me listing it's flaws that's definitely not my intention. It was a good time with cute art, and I'm quite satisfied.
