Aside from The Interestings (which I did not find interesting!), I have really enjoyed Meg Wolitzer's books. Maybe because we share race/gender/socioeconomics, her work really resonates with me. This novel, mainly about young women and one young man stumbling to find their power and satisfaction, kept me engaged throughout. I never found it predictable, even as so much of their experience felt familiar. So glad Wolitzer and I have reconnected!

I feel very annoyed about this, because it was a Fun Book to Read. Wolitzer is a great writer and I love how she manages to swap POVs so seamlessly. However, I can not shake off the feeling that this book was pointless. As in - clearly attempted, yearned for having a Great Message, and fell so short of it. Maybe this was in part because Wolitzer attempted to address All the Issues at once, but it came of as a reiteration of all the big thoughts we’ve heard before. The brownstone at the end killed me.

I feel like many of these female characters would describe themselves as “woke” and wouldn’t be believable in doing so. This book could easily have been 200 pages shorter as I didn’t feel the in-depth stories into many of the characters leant much to the overall story.
