Okay I totally fell out of practice writing reviews last year (? The year before last year?) but I decided I wanted to get back into reviewing books this year, and I've been sitting on this one for a few weeks.

Master of One has an incredibly intersting premise and after only reading the inside jacket I immediately sent a link to a friend in my writing group because it sounded like something we would've done in one of our collabs. Once I actually started reading the book, I was only more convinced that both she and I would love it.

Rags is a truly delightful character and his self preservation instincts are surprisingly endearing considering how often he thinks about ditching everyone who could possibly care about him so he can make it out alive. In fact he always ends up deciding to do the exact opposite of that which is probably exactly why it's endearing. He and Shining Talon (and their sloooooooowly developing friendship which even more slowly develops into possibly more) were amazing to read about and I looked forward to every chapter from Rags' point of view. I loved them both.

Unfortunatly it took me until page Four-Hundred-and-Sixty-Something to like ANY of the other characters. Except Somhairle. Somhairle is an angel and I would have died for him from the first page he appeared on. Everyone else... hm. I think my hang up was that this book has the Perfect premise for a Found Family set up but everyone else was so self centered and focused on their own problems and feelings that they just came off as really uncaring at best and rude and hateful at worst. Here Rags was trying to keep this band of people he felt responsible for safe and alive and they all wrote him off as not their problem and didn't worry or care about him at all. But! At page four-hundred-and-sixty-whatever that all changed and they were suddenly all very invested and working together and it it was great! It was a glorious team dynamic! But if you're going into this hoping for an amazing found family trope then you'd better get comfortable cause you're gonna be waiting a while.

Spoilery thoughts:
Spoiler
-If book two ever happens I'm excited to see what they do with Faolan... if he's still alive. Please still be alive.. I totally got the feeling they were kind of laying the groundwork for him and Somhairle to have a thing and I would be interested in that if they can play it right.
-TRANS GIRL EINAN TRANS GIRL EINAN TRANS GIRL EINAN
- The part at the end when Rags and Tal FINALLY kissed and then Rags was like 'Okay no more kissing until this is over and you don't consider yourself bound to me' was SO GOOD. Just. So Good.
-Rags with this small gaggle of Fae children that just. Follow him around and listen to him and talk to him. That's it, that's the thought.

All in all, if/when book two comes out, I will absolutely read it.

Really wanted more of Rags and Shiny, more background about the fae. There's lots of hints at intrigue and lore, but they're not followed through. Overall, super fun ragtag team vibes and really interesting premise, would love a sequel

Ever since I got this book in my FairyLoot box, well, I'll be honest - I was completely hesitant to dive into it. Mostly because of the cover and I was just like - meh, okay. Luckily for me, I got past the cover and dove into the damn book. It also didn't hurt that someone else wanted to read it with me.

In the end, it all worked out because I devoured this book. I honestly really enjoyed the heck out of this because it was really hard to put down Master of One. Whether it was the characters or the actual plot, I was just so invested. Plus Rags was hilarious and I enjoyed each and every second of his sarcasm. It gave me great joy whenever it happened (which was all the time).

Plus I really liked the magical element of this book. Although I am mad that we only found 4 of the masters and their little relics. Or in some cases - big relics. Either way I enjoyed the ones that they found because they were highly entertaining. Back to being mad though, it ended after we found the fourth one. We already know who the next two masters are, or so they say, but we have no relics for them? WHAT THE HELL GUYS?!?!?

Ugh, this book was really trying to kill me and I don't see another book added to GR yet. If this is left as a standalone.. I will riot.

Other than that, the romance was okay but really slow for me. Sometimes slow burns will work for me but ugh, I wanted more. Which, hopefully, that will happen whenever the next book is made. AKA I NEED IT NOW. HOT DAMN.

Humans are sticking glass shards into everyone after killing the fae.
Just gotta keep everyone down.
Now they're looking to rediscover the fae's ancient weapon. I guess cause you can never have enough power?
Lots of human's bonding with elemental creatures as they try and find a way to rebel against the evil queen and her legion of sorcerers. Cursing a plenty. Ends on a cliff hanger.
