This was a fresh Star Wars read. I enjoy getting content that’s around TPM era, since we don’t often get to expand the lore from that period. This was an okay story. It didn’t exactly thrill me, but it was nice to have new content.

This book didn’t blow me away like i hoped it would, but i didn’t find it to be an unenjoyable read by any means. Miller’s grasp of these characters is better in some places than others, but the cast as a whole is lovable and interesting enough that it kept me engaged throughout :)

Things I liked - DEPA!!!!!!! She’s the highlight of this book for me. She is someone i was excited to learn more about, and her path this story is great. I really enjoyed qui-gon and obi-wan, yoda’s moments were surprisingly good, and zilastra is a pretty solid villian as well i think. Plus,
palpatine and maul
showing up at the end was fun!!

Things i didn’t like - Some of the council members naturally get a little less time than others, and combined with some of the depictions not totally clicking for me, this was an area i felt falling short. Sure, there’s some council members at this point we’ve hardly seen anything about, so they work, but some members (ki-adi-mundi and adi gallia especially) didn’t really make sense to me here. I get that there’s a while till we see them in Clone Wars, but their depictions in this book felt a bit haphazard. Also, by no fault of the author, it’s hard to have a really interesting story with high stakes when it’s set a year before Phantom Menace. There’s not too much Miller can bring to the table on that front, so the story suffers a little there.

Overall, not my favorite but i enjoyed!!! It’s fun to see the Jedi Order of the prequels grapple with the effects of their decline a bit earlier in that fall. Good read!!

This is one of the most fun books I've read in a long time. I never wanted it to end. I loved seeing the relationships between the Council members and their dynamics with each other play out. Depa's story and desire to take on a Padawan after this is a perfect segue into her tutelage of Caleb/Kanan

This is a great book. One thing I particularly appreciated was the ties to different eras of Star Wars, including the High Republic, prequels and sequels (regardless of my opinion on those). It was very insightful to get more insight into members of the Jedi Council we don’t hear a lot about. The only shortfall is you know everyone is surviving so any danger doesn’t really have much drama to it.

Another banger from JJM! Spending time with the Jedi Council was a blast, and there were so many little (but unobtrusive) references to other Star Wars books and shows that I appreciated.
