This book is really good. It ponders the fascinating question of what happens to a Chosen One after they fulfill their destiny. Sloane and her four fellow Chosen Ones defeated the Dark One 10 years ago. They were teenagers who were chosen by a prophecy, and against terrible odds, they defeated the villain and saved the world. But in the now, Sloane is a mess. Having survived being kidnapped by the Dark One, she has PTSD and she's barely hanging on most days. Her boyfriend is a fellow Chosen One, and he's the golden boy of the group, the one who's adjusted well to normal life. On the 10th anniversary of the big event, something extremely unexpected happens, and Sloane is thrown back into the fight.

This book was really compelling. I love the idea of what happens after you've supposedly fulfilled your destiny. The Chosen Ones were recruited because they fulfilled the terms of a prophecy, and they were trained by the government to fight the Dark One. Their entire teenage lives were devoted to this, and when the Dark One is defeated, the five are left as incredibly famous people who have no training for real life.

Sloane is a prickly mess, but I really liked her. A chosen one who defeats the enemy and then fades back into obscurity and a normal life just isn't that interesting. Someone who struggles every day with the aftermath is much more fascinating.

The plot of this book went to some every unexpected places, and I won't say much about it, because I think not knowing much made it work better. Interspersed through the text are various documents, such as classified government reports, excerpts from books, and newspaper articles, and this material works really well with the story and helps with the excellent world-building. Chosen Ones is a really interesting and compelling read.

I received an ARC from the publisher through Amazon Vine.

I think this book was so gripping and thrilling. The format it’s written in is really phenomenal, and I love the use of different types of text to inform the reader. Love this book.

Veronica Roth creates a fascinating world in Chosen Ones and I enjoyed every minute of it! Recommend for science fiction/fantasy/thriller readers and, of course, fans of Roth's writing.

Thank you to Edelweiss for the digital arc.

This book feels like a bunch of player pieces were shaken together and spilled on a board game and the Veronica described her way through the maze of it.
