Disliking a few of Veronica Roth's other books I gave her another chance with this one and even if I'm not completely satiesfied, it was good. The main character was interesting and not bland like I found other ones out penned by her, the romance was not unexpected but overall sweet and the story itself was unpredictable and therefore captivating.
But I expected something entirely else when reading the blurb ... because the plot twists where just a bit heavy and nearly genre-changing in my opinion. Sadly, I think many of the things weren't explained profoundly and after reading half of the book the rest until the end felt rushed while the first half was dull at times. In comparison to other recently read books I think a solid 3 will do. It's not bad but it's just no favourite either.

A very interesting plot, I enjoyed that they did not seem to just have worked everything out just because they were the Chosen Ones. However the ending was very rushed, I'm unsure if Roth plans to write a sequel or not but even still the
meshing of the worlds and the group reuniting with Inez and then splitting up happened way too quickly
I would have preferred a few extra chapters fleshing out the end rather than just cutting it off.

This book has one of my favorite tropes: the reluctant hero. I just love a hero who gripes their way through saving the world!

Loved the writing but the plot changed in the middle and the end feels like its missing a few chapters

There’s so much more to this story than the synopsis on the back of the book. Twists and turns and even a walk through a steampunk-esque world. This has been beyond as good as I thought it would be when I first picked it up.

Hi this one really hit different, more thoughts later.

This is a novel I would consider more New adult than actually adult, the themes were intense but didn’t go in depth as much as I’m used to in adult material. The romance was a nice subplot and I was very invested in Sloane’s struggle.

The ending wrapped up so quickly I wouldn’t be able to call it perfect. However, the themes Roth was interested in were very much used well for the plot she achieved. And I really love the character work in this, almost everyone felt fleshed out. I just wish I could have had more time with it, that there was more of it! Which is an awesome sign for a book- I recommend it.

Thoroughly engrossing, full of twists and an interesting take on magic systems. Roth's flawed characters with sharp edges and unresolved trauma sing, exploring the complexities of being a hero after your adventure ends - and then what happens when you're asked to do it again.

I did guess the character-based plot twists (I felt they were pretty obvious) but not the worldbuilding-based ones.

A unique and gripping read that confronts the reality and aftermath of being a teenage chosen one.

Chosen Ones forces the reader to view the familiar trope in a new light, exploring the trauma and aftermath of being, in essence, groomed to fight an evil. The combination of a flawed, complicated antihero, realistic depictions of how different people cope with trauma, an engaging plot, and the well paced snippets of backstory in the format of reports and articles made this a difficult to put down, thouroughly immersive read.
